NEW HAVEN, Conn., and LARCHMONT, N.Y. — More than 500 miles of shoreline and open water were explored by kayak, paddleboard, and canoe over the course of ten days this summer as clean water advocates came together for the tenth annual Paddle for the Sound. This virtual sporting event, organized by Save the Sound, brought together athletes, outdoor enthusiasts, and environmental advocates to raise both funds and awareness for the protection of Long Island Sound and its surrounding lands and rivers.
Participants paddled individually from locations across the region, logging their miles and securing donations from friends, family, and supporters. Together, they raised more than $8,000 through personal fundraising and registration fees. Proceeds directly support Save the Sound’s work to fight climate change, preserve endangered lands, protect the Sound and its tributaries, and restore vital ecosystems in partnership with nature.
This year’s top paddlers for Total Distance were:
- 1st place – Ruth Hayduk, Bronx, NY, with 100.52 miles
- 2nd place – Beatrice Weinberger, Larchmont, NY, with 86.62 miles
- 3rd place – Jean Kostelich, New Rochelle, NY, with 81.99 miles
The Top Fundraiser title went to Wendy Fish, who raised an impressive $1,930 in support of Save the Sound’s mission.
For Wendy, paddling is both a personal passion and a way to give back:
“When the pandemic upended our world in 2020, I took to my board and became a ‘365 paddler.’ In those five years, I have paddled literally thousands of miles on Long Island Sound and the Connecticut River. From winter sightings of bald eagles to summer encounters with cownose stingrays, this amazing place is truly a sanctuary for me and the incredible life it holds.
For the fifth year in a row, it is my pleasure and honor to paddle for these vital waterways. I support Save the Sound because I care deeply about protecting this precious environment that provides so much to me.”
Now in its tenth year, Paddle for the Sound celebrates the rivers, lakes, forests, and open waters that make the Long Island Sound region extraordinary. By combining physical activity with environmental action, the event inspires participants and supporters alike to appreciate and protect the natural treasures that define our coastal communities.
We extend our sincere thanks to our prize sponsors: Outdoor Sports Center, Vía Láctea, East Rock Brewery, and Darn Tough Socks.
