Save the Sound has been involved in the fight to protect Oswegatchie Hills for many years. Here’s an update from our partners about an ongoing tradition to raise awareness and preserve the lands surrounding this natural gem:

Most days, the trails of Oswegatchie Hills Nature Preserve (OHNP) offer a peaceful escape – perfect for a leisurely hike, a dose of fresh air, or a heart-pumping climb through the rugged coastal forest above the Niantic River in southeastern Connecticut. Depending on the trail, a walking stick might be your best companion to tackle the steep, groomed paths that wind through this craggy terrain.
But once a year, the preserve transforms into something far more electric.
For the past four years, over 100 runners have laced up for “Run for the Hills”, a timed 5K trail race that winds through the natural splendor of OHNP. It’s not just a race – it’s a celebration of community, conservation, and the enduring fight to protect this cherished landscape.

A Race with a Purpose
Since the inaugural race in 2022, Run for the Hills has drawn new fans to the 457-acre preserve owned by the Town of East Lyme. It also spotlights the decades-long effort led by the Friends of OHNP and their sister organization, Save the River-Save the Hills, to preserve the surrounding land from development.
Since 2015, Save the Sound has joined the cause as a legal intervenor in ongoing litigation between the Town and a developer who owns the adjacent 237 acres. Their coalition, Save Oswegatchie Hills, continues to rally public support and raise awareness for the protection of this vital ecosystem.
Trail Running Meets Trail Advocacy
Organized as an officially timed SNERRO (Southeastern New England Road Race Officials) event, the race attracts a diverse crowd—from elite runners and high school cross-country teams to local running clubs, families, and first-timers. The inclusive atmosphere makes it a favorite for both seasoned athletes and newcomers looking to experience the thrill of trail running. https://www.oswhills.org/run-for-the-hills.html
According to Dave Baer, race organizer, Friends of OHNP board member, and avid runner, the event has injected fresh energy into the organization’s mission. “It’s more than a race—it’s a way to connect people to the land and the cause,” says Dave, “I had a runner comment afterwards that this was their first time in the Hills – but that they would be back, and that’s what it’s all about!”

Community, Camaraderie, and Pine Medals
After crossing the finish line, runners, volunteers, and fans gathered at the Niantic Public House – a local brewpub in Niantic Village – to toast the day’s achievements. Winners in each age category received one of the most distinctive trail race medals around: handcrafted medallions made from slices of native pitch pine, etched with the OHNP logo.
These pitch pines aren’t just symbolic; they’re part of the preserve’s ecological story. With ongoing efforts to replant and nurture native species, the medals serve as a tangible reminder of the land’s resilience and the community’s commitment to its future.
Looking Ahead
Plans are already underway for next year’s race, as organizers explore new ways to deepen awareness and engagement around the Hills. The goal is simple yet powerful: to connect more people to this extraordinary local landscape—while having fun with family, friends, and fellow runners.
