Promoting cleaner cars for a healthier population, economy, and planet
Transportation accounts for nearly 40 percent of Connecticut’s greenhouse gas emissions, more than double any other sector.
To build a clean energy future, we must transition to renewable energy while making electric vehicles and other zero-emission vehicles affordable and appealing to more Connecticut consumers.
The Connecticut Electric Vehicle Coalition is a group of environmental and community justice organizations, labor unions, and businesses that work together to advance policies that will build out electric vehicle infrastructure and put more electric vehicles on the road in Connecticut. The combination of these two goals will achieve significant economic, health, and climate benefits.
Electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles emit little or no harmful tailpipe pollution and less greenhouse gases than traditional combustion engine vehicles. They’re also cheaper to fuel, easier to maintain, and fun to drive. Learn more with the EV coalition factsheet and our Facts and Myths blog post.
But there are challenges to the wide adoption of electric vehicles, including vehicle price-tags, lack of familiarity, and inadequate charging infrastructure. To cut emissions and build a clean energy future, we must establish policies and incentives to solve these challenges.

The Connecticut Electric Vehicle Coalition partners with municipalities, develops legislative action items, and advocates to advance EVs. Major efforts have included:
- Passing key legislation (PA No. 16-135) in 2016 that helped promote electric vehicles in Connecticut, and continuing to advocate at the state legislature for greater consumer access to EVs. Read the coalition’s sign-on letter supporting direct sales of EVs.
- Ensuring that funds from Connecticut’s settlement with Volkswagen over the latter’s emissions violations support continued electrification of the state’s transportation system. Read the coalition’s letter to Volkswagen and comments on the Volkswagen Mitigation Plan.
- Pushing DEEP to fast track recommendations that will accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in its Comprehensive Energy Strategy and Electric Vehicle Roadmap.
- Encouraging the Governor’s Council on Climate Change to recommend policies that will speed the transition to clean, electric vehicles.
