DO LESS for a Healthy Yard this Year: Grass Clippings

Are you one of the many homeowners who rake their yard more often than they sweep their porch? Time to give your rake a break! Besides tearing grass from its roots, raking actually creates open spaces in your lawn for weeds to take hold.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll share some ways to DO LESS and have a more beautiful healthy yard.

DO LESS TIP #2: LEAVE GRASS CLIPPINGS ON YOUR LAWN

Think about how much time you (and/or your landscapers) spend raking or blowing your grass clippings off of your lawn. Totally unnecessary!

Grass clippings actually contain nitrogen and other nutrients you have been supplementing with harmful fertilizers. As long as you keep your lawn at a height of 2”-4” and mow regularly you won’t even see the dead clippings. For best results, use mulching blades on your mower to push the clippings down into the base of the lawn.

These practices not only save you time, but also reduce the need to fertilize, reduce your energy and water use, and ultimately cost you less money.

So what will you do with all your newly found free time? We suggest going out to the Sound and exploring all it has to offer. You’ll see for yourself why it’s so important that we protect it together.
