PRESS RELEASE: Paddle for the Sound returns August 1-10 to Support a healthier Long Island Sound

Join fellow paddlers in a kayak, SUP, or canoe challenge to protect clean water, wildlife, and coastal communities

NEW HAVEN, Conn., and LARCHMONT, N.Y. — Paddle for the Sound is back for its tenth year! From August 1 through 10, paddlers of all experience levels are invited to hit the water by kayak, paddleboard, or canoe to raise funds for clean water and a thriving Long Island Sound.

Participants can paddle at their own pace from any location, tracking their miles and submitting their progress to the Paddle for the Sound team. All funds raised will support Save the Sound’s work to protect the Sound and its rivers, restore vital habitats, fight climate change, and preserve the lands that sustain the region’s wildlife and communities.

Clean water is essential for both people and nature. Long Island Sound is home to over 100 plant species, 1,200 invertebrates, and 170 fish species. An abundance of birds and wildlife make their homes along its shores and islands. It’s also important to our regional economy, and a treasured resource for swimming, fishing, paddling, and connecting with nature. But it faces serious threats from pollution, habitat loss, and warming waters—challenges Save the Sound works every day to solve.

Paddlers will compete for prize packages valued at over $1,000, thanks to support from prize sponsors including Outdoor Sports Center, Vía Láctea, Darn Tough Socks, and East Rock Brewery. Prizes will go to first, second, and third place winners in the Total Distance Paddled category. Participants are encouraged to share photos and videos on Instagram with @cfe.savethesound and #PaddlefortheSound

“Paddle for the Sound is about more than just miles paddled. It’s about protecting the waters we love, the wildlife that depend on them, and the people who call this region home,” says Anne Urkawich, Member Engagement Manager at Save the Sound. “All event proceeds supports cleaner rivers, stronger ecosystems, and a healthier Long Island Sound.”

Your participation supports real, on-the-ground impact, like stopping pollution at its source, protecting native fish, and keeping our waterways clean. Plus, it’s a great excuse to get outside and enjoy the beauty of Long Island Sound.
