Save the Sound Celebrates Connecticut Sustainability & Resilience Week

Save the Sound is proud to celebrate the second Connecticut Sustainability and Resilience Week from September 28 to October 4, 2025! This annual observance, declared by Governor Lamont, recognizes that Connecticut residents are facing increasingly unpredictable weather, from this summer’s heat waves to last year’s flooding, and need solutions to build a healthier future.

Save the Sound is advancing sustainability and resilience in the entire Long Island Sound region by investing in nature-based solutions to strengthen our storm resistance, advocating for policy change to free us from fossil fuels, and advancing the science that helps us measure and adapt to our changing world.

The Henry L. and Grace Doherty Climate and Resilience Institute at Save the Sound is a regional climate change hub that uses data and metrics to educate the public, mobilize stakeholders, and deploy the nature-based solutions necessary to cut climate pollution, protect our habitats, and stabilize our shorelines.

“Resilience is essential to protecting communities from the impacts of climate change. The varied events planned for this week, from climate data analysis to on-the-ground actions that build community power, support this,” said Julianna McVeigh, Doherty Climate and Resilience Institute Campaigns Manager.

Save the Sound is hosting two events as part of Sustainability and Resilience Week:

  • Volunteers are installing rain garden with us in Hamden on October 1. Rain Gardens are a green infrastructure solution that divert water from manmade surfaces into gardens of native plants to filter stormwater pollutants and help combat localized flooding: Rain Garden Installations
  • Joining a cleanup helps keep trash out of our waters and contributes to data that influences policy stopping pollution at the source. Save the Sound cleanups this week included five public events on September 28, and one at Hartford’s Charter Oak Landing on October 4.   Save the Sound Coastal Cleanup Program | Volunteer Signup

The Doherty Climate and Resilience Institute at Save the Sound is also proud to co-host a technology transfer workshop next month with Restore America’s Estuaries, at which professionals, experts, and stakeholders will gather to exchange knowledge on living shorelines, a nature-based solution for more resilient shoreline ecosystems. 2025 Living Shorelines Tech Transfer Workshop ~ Restore America’s Estuaries

“We are so excited to host this unique opportunity for habitat restoration practitioners from across the country to engage and share knowledge,” said Katie Friedman, director of the Doherty Institute. “Nature is our first line of defense against climate change, and investing in nature-based solutions will lead to both healthier ecosystems and safer communities.”
