New Haven, CT—Save the Sound is proud to announce the 2025 Sound Environment Changemaker, the North Shore Land Alliance. The Sound Environment Changemaker award recognizes environmental champions in the Long Island Sound region who are taking action to protect and improve our regional environment, and to ensure that our natural resources are vibrant, healthy, and accessible.

Since 2002, the North Shore Land Alliance has protected over 1,500 acres of land on the North Shore of Long Island. Their ability to raise conservation funds, influence landowners, work with government, conserve ecologically significant and iconic lands, and educate citizens of northern Nassau County about land and water protection has been unparalleled. Their talented staff and key relationships have made an outsized impact for land protection and conservation in our region.

“The primary reason the North Shore Land Alliance protects land is to protect water,” said Lisa Ott, President and CEO of North Shore Land Alliance. “Since our founding in 2003, we have worked diligently to conserve and steward our community’s historic lands, waters and environmental resources.  Through education, outreach and volunteerism, we endeavor to connect people to nature and inspire a community conservation ethic. It is an honor to be acknowledged by and partner with Save the Sound, a champion in protecting the Long Island Sound and ensuring climate resilience. It will take all of us working together to protect this planet we call home.”

In 2024, the North Shore Land Alliance and Save the Sound collaborated on the future protection of the Braff property in Lattingtown and prepared a report on the property’s significance to the Congressman Lester Wolff Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Long Island Sound. The NSLA used that report to include the land in the NYS Open Space Conservation Plan and to fundraise toward future acquisition and protection of the property.

The North Shore Land Alliance will be recognized at Save the Sound’s annual meeting on Sunday, November 4th from 4-7 p.m. at Larchmont Yacht Club. Members of the public or press are welcome to attend, and registration can be found here.
